On-line Monitoring of ARD UPS

There are regulatory and safety requirements for ARD (Automatic Rescue Devices) in the lifts. In case of power failure, the ARD which runs on UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) operates the lift to bring it to the nearest floor. The trouble is that UPS needs to be replaced /replenished after 1-2 years. There are also UPS charging issues in case of frequent power failure. How does a facility know the health of UPS?

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a power supply which includes a battery to supply power in case of power outage. There are two types of UPS – Standby and On-line.

ARD in a lift is very important device for the safe operation of the lift. In case of power failure of say more than 30 second, ARD gets activated and operates the lift to bring it to the nearest floor. ARD is thus an emergency device and is critically dependent on the health of the UPS.

The batteries have limited life. The life of the battery depends on discharge and recharge cycles. More the discharge or more the cycles, the lesser is the residual life of the batteries.

For the lift ARD operation, it is important that the battery should always be healthy. Considering the fact that a society has a large number of lifts and does not always have adequate/ adequately skilled staff, the battery maintenance or health monitoring is an issue. Every manufacturer recommends a safe life of a battery. Good facility team goes as per this advice and replace the batteries in time. The issue comes when the actual life of the battery is found to be less than the recommended life and /or the battery replacement is considered to be a costly.

In any of these cases, we feel that an online monitoring of the health of the ARD UPS is a very important requirement. Please share thoughts / views on the same. Please let us know if you are already using a battery / ups monitoring system. Please share your comments or write to us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
